What is a PhD degree?
A Doctor of Philosophy degree is the highest degree obtained at a university. Upon receiving your PhD, you will be qualified to instruct students and conduct research as a faculty member at a college or university. An individual who pursues a PhD is one interested in the dissemination and furthering of knowledge.
What should I look for in determining whether a PhD is right for me?
The decision to receive a PhD should be determined by your desire to teach courses at university, and continue conducting research in your area of expertise. If you are more inclined to pursue a career in the commercial sector, obtaining a PhD may not help you meet your goals.
What is the minimum qualification for admission to a PhD Program?
Minimum qualification for admission to a PhD program is Master’s Degree in the relevant field with minimum 55% scoring.
At the time of filling up the application form, is it mandatory that I have with me mark sheet of my master’s program, till the final semester?
Yes, it is mandatory to have all the mark sheets.
When can I apply to a PhD program in any University?
The PhD application forms are accepted twice a year. For January session, is between Decembers to January. And for July session, is between April to June.
Who all are expected to submit an NOC?
If you are in a job, than irrespective of whether you are a full time or part time candidate, you have to produce an NOC from your employer
In the PhD entrance test, what subject will I be tested in?
In addition to the General subject, you will be tested in the subject of the PhD program you have applied to and the subject you have done your Masters degree in.
On what general basis is a candidate selected for a PhD program?
Score in the entrance test, performance in the interview rounds, proposed research ideas, academic record.
I have completed M. Phil. Will I be exempted from the entrance test?
No, there is no exemption from entrance test for M.Phil candidates.
Is PhD available on distance mode?
As per UGC guideline PhD in distance mode is not allowed.
How is a research topic/preliminary research idea decided?
Research topic is conceptualized by the candidate. It can be modified with the help of the appointed Guide and Co-Guide after selection. It is finally approved by the RDC authority of University.
What is the general pattern of classes for full time and part time candidates during the coursework?
For full time PhD candidates, classes are held during the week days. And for part time PhD candidates, classes are held on Saturday-Sunday.
How many Guides am I allowed to work with?
Two guides will be allowed, one main guide from the department and other co-guide can be from other stream/University.
Am I allowed to change my appointed guide during the course of the PhD?
No, unless the guide himself becomes unavailable for certain reasons.
What are the criteria for exemption from the course work?
A candidate who has completed M.Phil in full time mode with relevant course work is allowed exemption from course work
Is it mandatory to publish a research paper before submitting the thesis for award of PhD ?
Yes, minimum two papers in reputed journals
